RUNE — Roadway Edge Marker
A privacy-first, in-pavement sensing marker designed so the road itself can feel impacts, vibration, and changing conditions — without watching anyone. Reference model: RUNE-FW1.
Concept / In DevelopmentWhat RUNE is
RUNE is the edge sensing layer of the VALKYRIE architecture: a low-profile, snowplow-resistant raised pavement marker that embeds sensing and a mesh radio directly into the road surface. Distributed along a corridor, RUNE markers are designed to let the roadway register impacts, seismic vibration, and environmental and thermal conditions at the pavement itself — and relay those signals to nearby SEER field units for local interpretation.
Form factor
Geometry
Built like roadway hardware, not a gadget
RUNE is not a round puck. It is a wide, low-profile, aerodynamic raised pavement marker in the Botts'-dot lineage — with all four sides sloped so tires and snowplow blades ride over it rather than catch it. Symmetrical, chamfered, industrial DOT-grade appearance.
- Recessed reflector-insert pockets on the sides — passive reflectors today, an upgrade path to active LED / optical / V2X modules without changing the housing
- Bottom face exposes a vibration-coupling interface in contact with the roadway
- Snowplow- and impact-resilient geometry matching existing roadway hardware conventions

Engineered for the road surface
- Carbon-fiber-reinforced composite housing, matte ceramic finish
- Anti-skid ceramic composite wear cap
- UV-resistant impact shell
- Stainless-steel fasteners and precision-machined seals
- Replaceable O-ring environmental seal
Internal concept stack
The layered component concept, top to bottom. This is a design concept, not a proven or certified assembly.

Why it matters
Security
Secure by design
Designed around a secure element / TPM and sealed electronics, so each marker is intended to be a trustworthy node — not an attack surface in the pavement.
Privacy
Senses conditions, not people
RUNE is designed to sense roadway and corridor conditions — impacts, vibration, temperature — not personal identity. No cameras, no plates, no tracking of individuals.
Resilience
Survives the real road
Sloped geometry, plow-resistant profile, and replaceable wear components — matching the conventions of hardware that already lives on pavement.
